Outlander and film locations in Fife
Fife’s 17th-century villages and castles have played 18th-century Scotland, 1940s Inverness and the docks of Le Havre. Here’s where to find them.
Outlander in Fife
- Culross, West Fife: The village became Cranesmuir, home of Geillis Duncan, and the garden behind Culross Palace was Claire’s herb garden at Castle Leoch. It appears across several seasons. The palace is run by the National Trust for Scotland. The village is small and busy, so arrive early and park considerately. Website
- Falkland, North Fife: Falkland played Inverness in the 1940s and 1960s scenes. The Covenanter Hotel was Mrs Baird’s guesthouse, and the Bruce Fountain is where Frank sees the ghostly Highlander. Falkland Palace is worth a visit in its own right. Website
- Aberdour Castle, Aberdour: The castle became the abbey where Jamie recovers in season one. It’s cared for by Historic Environment Scotland, and Aberdour has its own railway station. Website
- Dysart harbour, near Kirkcaldy: The little harbour was dressed as the docks of Le Havre in season two. It’s on the Fife Coastal Path and free to visit.
- The Reaper, Anstruther: This historic herring boat appeared in the Dysart scenes and is now at the Scottish Fisheries Museum, where you can go aboard. Website
- Balgonie Castle, near Glenrothes: Played the MacRannoch home in season one. It’s private, so view it from the road.
